Fun Facts about Cadmium:

  • The name of the element was derived from the Latin “cadmia” and the Greek “kadmeia,”
  • Discovered by a German chemist, Freidrich Strohmeyer, in 1817.
  • Appears as a bluish-grey metal.
  • Very soft metal that can be cut with a knife.
  • All soils and rocks contain Cadmium.
  • Does not corrode easily.
  • Used in batteries, pigments, metal coatings, and plastics.
  • Highly toxic and exposure to the metal can affect kidneys and the skeleton.
  • Cadmium metal and oxides are insoluble in water.
